It’s unusual for us down here in the deep south of England to have much snow. It’s only about 3 inches south of Haslemere but apparently more like a foot deep a few miles north of here. It’s even less usual for the snow to lie for long, normally it warms enough for it to melt almost as soon as its fallen. But it’s still cold today

The covering of snow changes sounds and a deep calm and quiet covers everything

The snow makes things stand out and catch my attention, like this common gorse just starting to come into flower.

And this old dead birch left in splendid isolation for wildlife to colonise

The smallest birds find the sudden cold weather hard and today’s visitors to the bird table include robin, house sparrow, coal tits, chaffinch, dunnock when I can keep the thrush, blackbirds and pigeons from taking over
